PRAISE INDEED!
The following email arrived at church in December:
“Early September, on a visit to the UK for a funeral, I visited St. Patrick’s church, where I used to go twice a day before and after school (it was next door then). It was mid-afternoon and unfortunately the church was empty (except for Jesus), so I prayed for everyone not there. I was pleased to see on the display of the Parish Council one person I knew and I picked up the parish newsletter and have read this many, many times, and roared with laughter at the “Smile-A-While” segment. Further, I have distributed this segment in my parish (St. Mary Mackillop, Birkdale, Queensland, Australia) and in turn it has been sent to schools, other parishes and many priests, which enlightened the day of everyone that read it. I was just filing away the newsletter and thought I would just let you know that your newsletter is being read and enjoyed right across the world and I would also like to congratulate you and the whole parish on the standard of maintenance of the church. I believe it’s improved and this would have meant many sacrifices over the years. Finally, wishing you and all the parish all the blessings of Christmas and peace every day. ( James Walsh, ex-student, St. Patrick’s school)
“SMILE – A – WHILE” (thanks to St. Anne’s newsletter)
When the nuns in a convent won a Mini car in a Christmas Draw, the Mother Superior said it would be ideal for doing their weekly shopping at Tesco. She said Sr. Felicity could drive them there, and on Saturday morning the two of them set off but when they arrived at the store, the car park was full. “Never mind,” Rev Mother said, “Drop me at the door, drive round the block for twenty minutes or so, then come and collect me”. Sr. Felicity drove off but was soon stuck in traffic and when Rev. Mother came out with the shopping, there was no sign of the car. A policeman saw she was upset and asked if he could help. “Have you seen a nun in a little red Mini?” she inquired. “No, Sister, I haven’t,” he replied, “but these days, nothing would surprise me!”
- (and now a joke to celebrate the Scottish poet Robert Burns)
David Cameron is visiting a Glasgow hospital and enters a ward full of patients with no obvious sign of injury or illness. He greets one patient who replies, “Fair fa your honest sonsie face, great chieftain o’ the pudding race, aboon them a ye take yer place, painch, tripe or thairm, as langs my airm”. Cameron is confused, so he just grins and moves on to the next patient who responds, “Some hae meat an canna eat, and some wad eat that want it, but we hae meat an we can eat, so let the Lord be thankit”. Even more confused, he just grins and moves on to the next patient, who immediately begins to chant, “Wee sleekit, cowerin, timorous beasty, O the panic in thy breasty, thou needna start awa sae hastie, wi bickering brattle”. Now seriously troubled, Cameron turns to the accompanying doctor and asks, “Is this a psychiatric ward?” and the doctor replies, “No, This is the serious Burns unit!” (Burns’ night, January 25th)

This “gem church” will be open each day for private prayer and meditation from 9.30am. until 3.30pm.
